Medallion vs. Coin

Collector's Guide

The words are often used interchangeably, but coins and medallions are different things. Here is what sets them apart.

Coins

  • Issued by a government mint
  • Carry a face value
  • Are legal tender, even when the metal is worth far more

Medallions

  • Privately minted
  • No face value; not legal tender
  • Value comes from metal content, design and collectibility
  • Can honor people and milestones government coins do not

Rounds and Bars

  • Rounds are coin-shaped pieces of privately minted precious metal, usually valued for their metal content.
  • Bars are rectangular and produced in standard weights, such as 1 oz and 10 oz.
