What PF70 Means

Collector's Guide

PF70 is the highest grade a proof coin or medallion can receive. It means a professional grader found no post-production imperfections, even under magnification.

Where to Find the Grade

On a graded piece, the grade is printed on the label of the sealed holder, alongside the grading company and a unique certification number. This UFC 331 silver medallion is graded PF70 by NGC.

The 70-Point Scale

Coins and medallions are graded on the Sheldon scale, from 1 to 70. A 1 is barely identifiable; a 70 is perfect. Grades in the high 60s are excellent, but each step toward 70 is harder to earn and rarer to find.

What “PF” and “70” Stand For

  • PF means proof. A special striking process uses polished dies and planchets, usually striking more than once, to create sharp detail and mirror-like surfaces.
  • 70 means flawless. The piece shows no contact marks, hairlines or spots when examined under 5x magnification.

What Ultra Cameo Adds

Many PF70 pieces also carry an Ultra Cameo designation: strong contrast between frosted design elements, such as the portrait, and deeply mirrored background fields. It marks exceptional eye appeal on top of technical perfection.

Why PF70 Matters

  • Condition is locked in. Graded pieces are sealed in a tamper-evident holder that protects the surfaces.
  • Independent verification. The grade comes from a third-party grading service, not the seller.
  • Collector demand. Many collectors build their sets only from top-graded examples.
